Many people want smoother, healthier-looking skin but feel nervous about cosmetic treatments. One option that’s become very popular in Orlando, FL, in recent years is microneedling. If you’ve heard about this treatment, you may be wondering: Is microneedling safe?

At Anderson Family Dental, we’re here to answer your questions so you can feel confident getting the care you deserve. Let’s take a closer look at what microneedling is, the benefits it offers, and what makes it safe when performed by trained professionals like us.

WHAT IS MICRONEEDLING?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin treatment that uses tiny, controlled micro-injuries to stimulate your skin’s natural healing process. These small punctures encourage your body to produce more collagen and elastin, the building blocks that keep your skin smooth, firm, and youthful.

When performed with medical-grade devices in a professional setting, microneedling is FDA-cleared and considered safe for most people.

BENEFITS OF MICRONEEDLING

Reduces fine lines and wrinkles

  • Improves acne scars and other types of scars

  • Smooths uneven skin texture and tone

  • Minimizes the appearance of large pores

  • Brightens dull, tired-looking skin

  • Helps fade sun damage and pigmentation spots

  • Encourages firmer, more youthful-looking skin

IS MICRONEEDLING SAFE?

The short answer is yes! Microneedling is safe when it’s done by a trained professional using properly sterilized equipment in a medical environment. At Anderson Family Dental, we follow strict protocols to ensure your comfort and safety at every step.

That being said, not every microneedling provider follows the same high standards. The risks of complications increase significantly when the treatment is performed by an unqualified person or in a non-medical setting, such as a spa that does not follow proper sterilization practices.

POSSIBLE RISKS OF MICRONEEDLING

Like any cosmetic procedure, microneedling has some risks, but most are minor and temporary when performed correctly.

Common, Short-Term Microneedling Side Effects

Within the first 24 to 48 hours after microneedling, many people experience:

  • Mild redness similar to a sunburn

  • Slight swelling or sensitivity

  • Temporary dryness or flaking.

These side effects are generally mild and fade quickly, leaving your skin looking refreshed.

Risks with Improper Technique or Unsafe Settings

As safe as microneedling is when done properly, there can be significant risks when microneedling is done by someone without proper training or with equipment that isn’t appropriately sterilized, including:

  • Infection from unsterilized needles or due to poor aftercare instructions

  • Scarring or pigmentation changes may occur if the device is used incorrectly

  • Excessive bleeding if performed on someone taking blood thinners or with underlying medical issues like autoimmune disease

  • Delayed healing if underlying health issues aren’t taken into account

Microneedling can also spread infections, such as acne or cold sores, to individuals with skin problems like eczema or psoriasis. That’s why a thorough review of your medical history is a key part of how we determine whether microneedling is right for you!

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR MICRONEEDLING?

Like every treatment at Anderson Family Dental, your journey to a refreshed and rejuvenated appearance starts with a personalized consultation and thorough review of your goals, concerns, and medical history.

During your consultation, we may recommend postponing microneedling or considering a different approach if you:

  • Have an active skin infection or open wounds

  • Are pregnant

  • Have certain medical conditions that affect healing

  • Are taking blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder

If microneedling is the right approach for you, we proudly provide safe and predictable treatment in a clean medical setting.

WHAT IS THE MICRONEEDLING PROCESS?

One of the best parts about microneedling is how simple and straightforward the process is. At Anderson Family Dental, we’ll guide you through every step so you feel comfortable and confident.

Before Your Appointment

We’ll start with a consultation to discuss your goals, review your medical history, and make sure microneedling is the right fit for you. In many cases, this conversation may happen as part of your consultation for other cosmetic dentistry procedures or during your routine dental cleaning

In the days leading up to your appointment, we may recommend avoiding retinol creams, excessive sun exposure, or certain medications that can increase sensitivity.

During Your Appointment

You’ll relax in our pristine dental office while we gently clean your skin and apply a topical numbing cream. Most patients say the treatment feels like light scratching or tingling, but numbing cream makes it very tolerable.

The handheld device creates controlled, microscopic channels in the skin. This takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Afterward, we may apply a calming serum or growth-factor product to enhance results and soothe your skin.

After Your Appointment

Your skin may look slightly red or flushed, similar to a mild sunburn. This usually subsides within 24 to 48 hours. We’ll provide easy-to-follow instructions, such as avoiding heavy makeup, skipping the gym for a day or two, and using gentle, hydrating skincare products.

Within a few days, your skin will start to look brighter and more refreshed. Over the following weeks, as your body produces more collagen and elastin, you’ll notice a smoother texture, reduced fine lines, and an overall healthy glow.

Long-Term Benefits

Most patients see the best results after a series of treatments, usually spaced 4–6 weeks apart. With proper skincare and sun protection, the improvements can last for months and even continue to build over time.
